Together and apart

As a starter for working with sets, an often forgotten part of maths, let us consider groups.

From an early age, whether in classrooms or in activities, we are put into groups. This makes it familiar for young children. It is also applicable to sets for what is a set of items if not a group of items.

So let our children think of the different groups and groupings they are in.

This can then be expanded to groups of animals and elements of nature.

Then we can allow them to consider groups of inanimate objects.
