Making things the SAME

Solving Games

Leading to working with equations and equality, we need to be able to work with mathematical objects and make them equal.

For a young child all things are not equal. In fact equality is a strange concept.

So to make things the same in one's mind, when on the face of it they are different (in space, colour, age and so on), is a daunting task.

So take money: make two coins the same as one coin. This requires a conception of the value of money. It requires us to associate number with value and then know that irrespective of where numbers are, they can be given equality.

We could also work directly with numbers in the first place, which two numbers make 6. Give another two numbers that make 6. Where is the equality in this? Describing equality is a useful skill to reinforce the concept.
