SETS

Intro

We use sets to make working with groups easier. Sets allow us to understand how groups of items relate to each other.

Prior Knowledge & Skills

Set theory makes use of various symbols and graphical representations. It is useful to have a clear understanding of basic arithmetic operations and be familiar with the use of symbols.

Progression

Learning about sets often begins with types of number and being able to understand basic relationships (for example with odd numbers or even numbers). Set notation introduces us to how numbers are grouped together {1,2,3,4}. Venn diagrams shows how sets overlap, intersect, and make unions.

Uses

Sets get us thinking about relationships - how different classes of information relate to each other. Not only with numbers but also making connections in computing and data handling.
